Privacy policy

Last updated 20 October 2026

Most people using Afterhour are high school students, so we collect as little as we can, keep it in Australia where we can, and never sell it. This policy follows the Australian Privacy Principles.

What we collect

  • Account: your email, name, and (if you sign in with Google or Apple) the basic profile they share.
  • Profile: school, graduation year, course, prescribed texts, study type and companion, which you choose during onboarding.
  • Study activity: focus sessions, groups, trainer answers, journey progress.
  • Your work: essays and exam answers you submit, and the marks and feedback for them.
  • Billing (Pro only): handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number; we keep your Stripe customer ID and subscription status.

Why

To run Afterhour for you: mark your work, build practice papers, show your insights and progress, run study rooms with friends, and bill Pro. We also look at aggregate, de-identified usage to improve the app.

Who else handles it

  • Supabase: our database and sign-in, hosted in Sydney.
  • Anthropic: the AI that marks and gives feedback. Your submitted work is sent to it for that purpose only, and isn't used to train its models.
  • Stripe: payments for Pro.
  • Vercel and Inngest: hosting the app and running background marking jobs.

Some of these providers may process data outside Australia. We only use providers with strong security and privacy commitments.

What other students see

Your handle and display name, plus whatever you allow in settings → privacy: your school, level, study hours and projected mark can each be public, friends only, or hidden. Your essays and feedback are never shown to anyone else.

Your choices

  • Change what's visible any time in settings.
  • Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct it, at hello@afterhour.study.
  • Delete your account in settings. This removes your profile, work and history, and cancels any Pro subscription. Stripe keeps payment records it's legally required to.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit, access is locked down per student at the database level, and only the people who run Afterhour can reach it for support. If something ever goes wrong we'll tell affected students promptly.
